The designer make a good effort on designing this awesome design out. I'm really impress of the idea of it, even it is just as simple as it can, but it can make me yell and fall in love with it simplicity design.

♠ Shanghai Expo - UK PAVILION

Even though shanghai expo has past already, but there's something that i think i should blog about it. Among all the country's pavilion, i think the most attractive pavilion will be the UK pavilion. It's unique and creative design had grab my attention on it. Just look at the form of it, it already grab a lot of people attention on it.

The design of the UK's pavilion is inspired by dandelion which symbolize pure, life, and fresh.

Can you notice out the pavilion design's seem to have a strong connection with UK's flag, it seems to be having a symbol of UK. Try to notice at all the picture, you will get to find out there's something to see from it's design.

Inside the pavilion, there is a Seed Cathedral, 20 metres in height, formed from 60,000 slender transparent fibre optic rods, each 7.5 metres long and each encasing one or more seed at its tip. During the day, they draw daylight inwards to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources inside each rod allow the whole structure to glow. As the wind moves past, the building and its optic "hair" gently move to create a dynamic effect.

You can get to see there are different kind of seeds in the pavilion. Some how it's look artistic to me. Even it is just arrange nicely, but it's interesting.

After the expo the rods and seeds will be distributed to schools in China and UK.

♠ Typography

What is typography?

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type, type design, and modifying type glyphs. Type glyphs are created and modified using a variety of illustration techniques. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces, point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters (kerning). Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, and clerical workers. Until the Digital Age, typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography to new generation of visual designers and lay users.

In order to make typography works, they are a few things we have to concern. Typography need to be design well, and make sure it is readability, legibility and credibility. The font that we create out must be come with a certain characteristics which are easy for the process of reading it. We must make sure the text can be read and easy for understanding. Then the typography will make sense to be work well.

Here's a few picture that i'm showing out for the good usage of typography.
Highways Agency: Smarter driver
encourage drivers to be prepared before they hit the road. From the font of weather, you might think of that winter is coming, they are trying to tell driver to be well prepare and plan well before there hit the road.

♠ Japan - Automated Car Parking

As we all know that Japan is a small country with a limited space to build up mega building, that is why they have to make use of every part of the space in their country. I'm quite impress with the design of the underground car park which is automated. All you need to do is, just park your car to the door that they lead you to, and your car will be sent to the underground and park nicely without you to find the parking for the car. This save your time, save your energy and you don't need to find your car park till you wanna gone mad and keep on blame that why there's not enough space for you to park. Japan have not enough space, therefore they have to make use of their underground part, turning it into another usable space.

Here's a video showing that how the underground automated parking works.

♠ Before and After

What's the hottest topic by now after SHANGHAI EXPO??
Is 2010 Asian Games that happening in Guangzhou, China now. =)

Did you know that when a designer design sport complex for such a big event, they need to think for the usage of it after the Asian Games. Even the shanghai expo, they will think of what to do with the pavilion after the event.
Here's picture of Guangzhou main sport complex. The sport complex design's highlights with the concept of the "elegant ribbon" theme. This big structure will turn into a multi-purpose functions building complex, and well to be prepare to serve the public after the Asian Games. This building will have an 8000 seats Basketball Hall, with a variety of function.

Interest to look at the next 2014 Asian Games's Sport complex which will be at Incheon, South Korea? Here you go. =)

According to Architecture Daekwon Park, the design concept is base on the dance as dynamic movement to create the shape of the stadium, and the overall shapes will form a complementary of yin and yang.

After the Asian Games, the stadium size will be reduced and it will be turned into a 3000 seats stadium and park for south korea citizen.

♠ Form versus Function

Form Follows Function or Function Follows Form??

Form Follows Function is a principle associated with modern architecture and industrial in the 20th century. The principle is that the shape of a building or object should be primarily based upon its intended function or purpose. [wikipedia] What about Function Follows Form?? It can be said as a reverse design for architecture. Applying the principle of Function Follows Form, it's like playing a game, whether you will manage to apply it well or not. A building which come with a good form will tend to attract people's attention. What if the design inside it was terrible or not planning well, it will be a disaster. It's really depends on the designer himself, he have to find out the balance between form and function. I'm going to show an example that i read from a {blogger} which i agree with his point of view, here you go. A building that tend to applying the principle of function follows form and manage to apply it well, BURJ AL ARAB.In terms of form, it manage to grab people's attention and with it's unique design, it might become a significant sculpture for DUBAI.
Let's go for another building that tend to apply the principle of function follows form, which made a bad example for this principle, MIT Stata Center. In terms of form, it manage to grab people's attention, but in terms of function it fail to design it well. There's a lot of voices from the people saying that the accumulations of snow and ice, fallen dangerously from window boxes and other areas of its roofs, blocking emergency exits and causing damage.
Do think wisely when u designing your building. =)

Instead of applying it at building or sculpture, we can link it to our daily product. Nowadays, people desire level grow even higher than we can think. They want somethings that come with a good form and function too, so that is reasonable for them to purchase it well. If you tend to want me to agree with form follows function, i might get some design that stick with the function without having much design on it, cause every part of the process of designing the product, i will tend to put more effort on the part of function, even when i design the form or it i will think of whether it will affect or suit with the function of it or not.
Look at this cute groovy teapot. It's look like a sculpture when it is not filling with tea, isn't it a good design. In terms of form and function, it manage to grab people's attention and come with a usable function too. This is a product what people always looking for, not just good at looking, they still can use it well too.
Spot this cute TOOTHPIKS. Isn't it another good example of having a good form and function too. Is hard for us to think of whether it is applying the principle of form follows function or function follows form.

Hence, i would think that to have a great design between the principle of applying form and function, we will have to find out the balance between them. I always believe that a good design doesn't always stick with some straight rules. It's depends on the designer himself, how they play with the design and how they understand the rules well. Form and function can be apply at anywhere instead of building or sculpture design. Although i didn't stand on any side to agree with whether form follows function or function follows form, but I do agree with {Mies van der Rohe}, who think that function follows form always end up with formalism, satisfied the building's appearance form outside view, but we don't know what will be happen inside. That's why we have to be careful when we applying function follows form. With a good outside view, but inside is terrible function, who will want to give you good comment on such disaster design.

♠ Menjarosa by Dooa Arquitecturas

I don't think in Malaysia's school, we will get to find this big blackboard wall that provide by the school for student to draw on it. If we tend to draw our school wall, we will get punish by principal. This kiddo in Spain are super lucky enough to have such a wonderful design for them. Let's envy them for a while. =)

This blackboard wall are part of the extension to the school's structure, crafted with the intention of maximizing the play space. As we all know, children like to draw, they like to draw at any place, with this huge blackboard wall, they can draw wildly all over the place. The most important part is nobody will scold them.

When i first saw this post - [http://www.dezeen.com/2010/11/11/menjarosa-by-dooa-arquitecturas/] , i found that this is a something that different with the traditional school's design, this is unique and out-standing. A designer must not always design somethings that looks good, we have to design something that looks good and functionable. We always design something that looks nice and tend to forget it functionality. Therefore, we will only design something that keep on stick with the original one without creating something new and unique.

♠ Jackie Chan's Cafe

I think i'm a bit outdated to find out this cafe shop in KL. When i walked around in lot 10 last week, i found out this cafe shop, so called "Jackie Chan's Cafe". The first thing that i wonder at that moment is whether the shop was really owned by Jackie Chan and yet it is. How i know?? Due to my curiosity, i google it and found out it's really owned by Jackie Chan.

You know why i'm so curious about this cafe shop, i was attracted by it's interior design rather than the name of Jackie Chan. There's not a lot of table like those normal cafe that we saw, they only come with one big round sofa, everyone will be sitting around the sofa. Even their design is just as simple as you can think, but i wish to sit over there to have a cup of coffee. I'm sad that i didn't bring my camera along with me that time and yet my mummy and daddy rushing time to go home. The only think i can show you all is the picture that i grab from others blogger's blog.

Isn't it cool and comfortable. I like starbucks, but starbucks's table are always putting like as pack as you can imagine. Jackie Chan's Cafe provide you a comfortable environment even you are sitting in the center of the mall. Who will said no to hug a pillow when you having a cup of coffee. =) I mean when they design the cafe shop, they really think from consumer's side. What they want and what they need.

Once again, it proof that form and function do run an important role in design. Even though you have a good form but your function didn't achieved the satisfaction level that rate by customer, it will fail to attract customer to come to your place. Hence, i will find a day visit to Jackie Chan's Cafe to try on their drinks. (=

♠ 9 Tsubo

Have you ever heared about 9 Tsubo??
9 tsubo is the latest trend house design in Japan, and it's quite popular among the youngster. It's designed by Makoto Masuzawa in 1952 as an "absolute minimum" house anyone could afford, the 9 tubo has been revived of late by Makoto Koizumi and others, who are now working to bring this concept to homeowners in Japan today. I'm quite impress with the small house design, i never think of a small house can be such a functionable house too. As you can see all the houses surrouding us, are usually mained to build as big as it can. I think this will be my dream house, i always look for something that simple and comfortable feel, i don't prefer to complex design. Complex doesn't always mean good and bravo, somehow simple doens't mean easy to made too. A good design come with good form and function, if you can handle this two well, you will get a good work.

♠ Fashion versus Architecture

There's once a designer said before, fashion is like a moving building, state that fashion can be related with architecture. Indeed is true, if you have a good concept, you can apply in both fashion or even architecture. There's a good example of fashion show that happened in Shanghai Expo, all the clothing that wear by model during the fashion show, were almost having a strong connection to their country's pavilion. By just looking at different country's pavilion, it's already like watching a building fashion show.

♠ Concept store - H5

H5, a concept store that located in Bangsar Village, it is a wristwatch and lifestyle store founded by Tong Chee Wai. This shop carrying cult, underground and high street brands like Nooka, Alive Tokyo timepieces and FeiYue shaolin shoes.

Before i went to this shop, i did a bit research on it. According to Tong Chee Wai, the basic design of the shop is inspired by science lab, thus the store certainly looks it - sleek, minimalist, clean, white and even clinical. It's starkness serves to only promote the brands they carry because they are anything but!

I was attracted by it's interior design when i first saw it. These cute and fat Mc'Donald attract me. Sad that i cant get to capture the photo when i walk in to this shop. It's really like a science lab, i feel like getting part in it.

I'm that kind of person will always look for simplicity. Simplicity doesn't seems that easy to achieve. I do think that something if you can't get to bring out the simplicity feel, you will tend to bring out something that over simple. This will make people feel like, you just simply put over there without applying any design on it and hence you will fail to bring out the message that you wanna deliver.

♠ Environmental Design

What is Environmental Design?
Environmental Design is a place based marketing that offers customer experiences in making contact with the brand. There are different type of 3D media in our environments such as exhibition, showrooms, window displays, information kiosks, train stations and so on. Their purpose is made for advertising media.

Have you ever been to any exhibition booth before? Did you know that what are they trying to tell you? Do their booth's design attract you?
A good exhibition booth's design will manage to take audience's attention on it. Thus their curiosity will make them take a step into the booth and ask more about it. People will always come with a strong curiosity when they see something new, they will wanted to try on it and experience it. Effective demonstration can be done through exhibition booth, the product can be tested or tasted. If your booth manage to look outstanding, sure they will visit your booth.

Here is an example of SONANCE's exhibition booth.
Sonance is a high-end architectural audio company and they are specializes in flush-mount wall and celling speakers. The exhibit showcases the company's new product line and identity.
Their exhibition booth's design were inspired by their marks which means the increasing volume of sound. In sense of creativity, they did a good job, they do manage to attract people attention with their outstanding design. Who will not look at this tall exhibition booth. The booth come with a modern design and even they just using simple shape to make it out, but they still manage to bring out the theme of it.
